When a child is brought for Baptism the baptism secretary prepares
the Baptism Certificate together with the "Light of the World" candle
and presents them to the child during the service.
Our interest in these children continues beyond their Baptism, they are
visited on their following birthday when a birthday card is taken to
them and they are invited to "Messy Church"
"To provide a time of meaningful Christian fellowship and worship for families and family supporters within the wider Church community."
What is ‘MessyChurch’? – The official answer –
‘Messy Church started as one church’s attempt to be church for families who might want to meet Jesus, belong to their local church and bring up their children as Christians but can’t cope with traditional Sunday morning services. It’s a once-a-month time of creativity, worship and eating together.’ This is the official blurb
It is hoped that the families we attract will be families who would like to bring their children up as Christians but for one reason or another find a weekly Sunday commitment difficult. It will be facilitated and supported by current Church families members of the congregation who are keen to support families in this way. – This is what we put in our Mission statement
All ages are welcome but the nature of the fellowship and worship it provides naturally appeals to young families. Any child who attends is to be accompanied by an adult and so it is a time when the whole family can share in activities together.
We meet on the last Saturday of each month at Sewerby Methodist Church from 3.30- 5.30pm and everyone is welcome to come along and join us. We have made many new friends in the short time we have been running and look forward to meeting many more people on our exciting journey together!
The ‘service’ will have 3 main elements to it, that of craft and play, a time of celebration and an opportunity to share a meal and our thoughts. All will be based around a Christian theme/Biblical verse.
Previous Messy Churches –
We acted out the calling of the fisherman, and how Jesus calls us all to serve him. We created a lovely display of fish and the children and young people made 3D aquariums and then we enjoyed fish fingers and chips for tea!
One World Week provided us with the theme ‘God loves everyone, and God loves me!’– This focused on each one of us being important to God. We enjoyed listening to the story of ‘The Lost Sheep’ and made sheep masks. We did jigsaws and played games finding out about other countries in the world. Some of the younger children enjoyed splashing in the water play and we made fridge magnets showing lots of children holding hands stretching around the world. Emma made us a fabulous sheep cake – it seemed such a shame to cut into it!
Light was the theme for Advent and the children went into church to see the Advent Wreath and to look at the banners. We made lots of different candles in different medium and then tucked into bangers and mash, depicting a sausage candle in a holder of mash!
On Christmas Eve we celebrated ‘Jesus’s Birthday Party’ and read the nativity story to remind us why we celebrate Christmas. Then we played party games and had a lovely party tea. One of the mums from the village made a beautiful gingerbread nativity scene and the children were all able to decorate their own gingerbread biscuit to take home. The gingerbread scene stayed in church for everyone to enjoy over the Christmas period!.
In January our worship was based on the story of ‘Noah’s Ark’. We sang The Arky, Arky Song’ and played along to it with the instruments and then made lion masks and lots of animals to go into the ark which is displayed in the vestibule for all to see. The children made their own animal biscuits to ice and take home.
